Barristan Selmy, also known as Barristan the Bold, first appears in the first season of the HBO TV show, *Game of Thrones*.
He is initially a member of King Robert Baratheon's Kingsguard, renowned throughout Westeros as a legendary knight and warrior.
Dismissed from the Kingsguard by King Joffrey Baratheon, Selmy is spared execution and subsequently flees King's Landing.
